Electroplated Nickel Silver – EPNS,
An alloy of copper, nickel, and zinc typically with composition of 60% copper, 22% nickel, 18% zinc, and electroplated with silver.

Electroplating,
The technique using an electrical current to deposit a thin uniform layer of metal on a conductive object to improve either its mechanical properties, chemical corrosion resistance, or aesthetic appearance. Initially the process, invented by Werner Siemens in 1842, was used to deposit silver on copper and was introduced to England in the following year by his brother Karl Wilhelm.

Electrum,
A naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver.

Embossing,
The process by which decorations are created in relief on the surface of a material. When the decorations are raised above the surface it is called high relief embossing, when they are sunken below the surface it is called low relief embossing. Embossing is normally done with the help of a metal die that with the use of pressure, heat or both forces the material into the desired pattern. Embossing can be done on materials including paper, card, leather, metal, wood and plastics.

Embroidery,
Decorative designs sewn on cloth with a needle and thread or yarn.

Embroidery,
Embroidery, or the art of embellishment of fabrics by means of needle worked stitches. With raised designs and an extensive variety of stitches and materials including threads of silk, cotton, gold or silver upon the surface of woven cloth. Embellishment or ornamental designs on a textile; done by using a needle to work stitches on to its surface. A variety of different types of stitches are used to create different decorative effects. Materials such as beads, sequins, mirrors, shells and jewels are also often attached to surface using needle and thread for embellishment.

Embroidery frame / stretcher,
A rectangular wooden frame, with tapes of fabric fastened to each side, to which the ground or backing fabric for the embroidery is usually attached by stitching or lacing. Frames are used to keep the ground fabric taut and are especially necessary for couched metal thread work.

Emphasis,
The accent, stress, or importance of a part of an artwork. Opposing sizes, shapes, and lines, contrasting colors, closer detail, and intense, bright color are all used to emphasize, or draw attention to, certain areas or objects in a work of art.

Enamel/Mina,
Enamel/Mina is essentially glass which is ground to a powder before being fired on to a metal base. The ground glass is a combination of silica and soda ash with addition of small amount of metal oxides to give it colour. Firings can take from 30 seconds to several minutes, with the kiln heated between 650°C and 1000°C, depending on the techniques and materials used. Industrial, or liquid, enamels are enamel frits ground very finely and mixed with other components to make a liquid suspension. This is applied to a metal surface with a spray gun, a brush, or by dipping.

Enamelling,
Enamelling is a decorative technique of firing a vitreous, glass like coating on to a metal surface. Enamels are a mixture of powdered glass and metal oxides, this mixture is carefully put on to the surface of a metal and fired. On firing enamels undergo chemical changes and form transparent, translucent, opaque and opalescent coatings on the metal surfaces. In India enamelling is commonly known as Minakari, it is also often combined with processes such as Kundan, filigree, bead work to create jewellery.

Enamelling/Minakari,
Enamelling/Minakari is the process of fusing layers of ground glass onto metal using a kiln or torch. . Suitable metals for enameling include gold, silver, copper, aluminium, and steel.

End-rings,
Metal collars fitted to the ends of rotary screens with adhesive. They are given register marks so that each screen can be correctly fitted in position in the printing machine.

Endpaper,
Endpaper is a sheet of strong paper, half of which is pasted on the inside cover of a book, the other half of which forms the flyleaf, the first or last blank sheet.

Ends,
Individual warp threads. A warp end is one warp thread of the prepared warp.

Engraving,
Process of carving or cutting pictures, letters, or designs into a hard material such as wood, metal, or ivory with a graver, burin, or other sharp, chisel-like tool. When the surface is inked, a print can be made from the form.

Engraving,
The incising of lines in a metal or other surface by means of a graver or burin. In the textile trade this term is still used even when the pattern rollers are produced by etching or by pressure from the raised surface of a mill in an ‘engraving machine’. The process of creating a design on a hard surface by cutting groves into it is called engraving. This is done to decorate the surface of materials like silver, gold, steel, lacquer and glass. Engraving is also done on flat metal surfaces to create printing plates that are used to print images on paper.

Enter,
To enter wool, to put it into the dye or mordant liquor.
