Sized Liquid,
Sized Liquid is a liquid thickened with size to assist marbling paints to float. The most common sizing agent is cavrageena, a deriovative of seaweed, which causes the water to thick to a gelatinous consistency.

Skein,
A continuous strand of yarn wrapped into a collapsible coil. The knitter can pull the yarn from the center of the skein rather than unravel it from the outside.

Sketch,
A simple, quick, rough drawing done without a lot of detail but catching the chief features and a general impression of an object or scene.  

Ski Shuttle,

Skimmer,
Skimmer is a strip of a wood used to skim the surface of the sized liquid contained within the marbling tray to rid it of dust and air bubbles.

Slashing,
The controlled distortion necessary to print horizontal stripes by engraved roller. The roller is engraved with the stripes set at and angle of 22 ½ -30° from the horizontal and printed on to cloth stentered off-grain at the same angle. The same effect can be produced photographically on a pull-in machine.

Sleying,
Passing the warp ends through the dents in the reed.

Sleying Hook,
A small flat tool with a hook used to pull the warp ends through the reed.

Slip,
Transferring the stitch from one needle to the other without adding any yarn.

Slip number,
Objects transferred from the Indian Museum to the South Kensington Museum (later the Victoria and Albert Museum) in 1880 are entered in record, or ‘slip’ books. The ‘slip number’ of the object identifies the relevant page.

Slit-tapestry weave,
Tapestry weave in which the adjacent areas of colour are separated by slits in the woven fabric, achieved by repeatedly turning back the discontinuous weft around adjacent warps.

Soda ash,
Carbonate of soda.
